The Most Stylish Game
Last year, I lauded Overwatch for being an incredibly stylish and fun game. This year, I get to do the same for last month’s Persona 5, the latest entry in the JRPG series. While Persona certainly has less general appeal than Overwatch, I found it a very entertaining and wonderful experience.
I could talk quite a while about the rather dark setting of the game, and the narrative, characters, leitmotifs… but I won’t.
Instead, the thing I want to talk about is what I couldn’t get over during the 80 hours of time I devoted to my first playthrough of this game.
That thing being the artistic direction they have taken in regard to this game. Every menu just oozes style, every transition is beautiful and keeps you immersed in the experience.
Even the segments where you’re mainly reading chunks of text (like in a visual novel) are surprisingly engaging. Never have I ever encountered such fascinating menu design in a game before.
In case you want to see what I'm talking about: here’s a link to a GameSpot post that showcases the menu design.
And, oh boy, I won’t shut up about the amazing soundtrack. The majority of the soundtrack has been stuck in my mind for the last few weeks.
I'm not usually sad after finishing a game, but I was after completing this one. I might do a write-up on the game when I run through the game again. Which I definitely want to do, because I feel like I need more Persona in my life. (I still need to go through Persona 4 as well!)
