Apple's absolute dominion over the laptop market

October 18, 2021 1 minute read

So Apple just announced a MacBook Pro that fixes most common complaints people had with the 2016 and 2019 models:

  • The excellent M1 processor (but faster) instead of Intel
  • An amazing display with 120 Hz ProMotion
  • The return of an HDMI port and SD card slot
  • A better cooling system
  • The return of MagSafe
  • Touch Bar is gone 🦀🦀🦀

With the announcement of Apple’s M1 Pro and M1 Max chips, as well as this new MacBook Pro, Apple will now own the laptop market until the competition get their shit together and can ship a laptop that is comparably powerful and energy-efficient. Once you unplug a PC laptop, its performance tends to tank, and battery life is abysmal.

So, when will the competition get their shit together? I have no clue. It might take a while. AMD is talking about big performance gains, so I’m curious to see where that’ll go.

I bought a Mac mini with M1 and a MacBook Air last year so I’m going to sit this one out until I save up enough money. I don’t need to buy a new laptop each year, right? (Let’s see how long I hold out until I end up buying one.)
