A few hours ago, Nintendo announced their latest home console, the Nintendo Switch by publishing a 3-minute video and letting the press know a bit more about the device. If you haven’t watched it, you can do that now.
I have to say: I watched the video and I was very impressed. It seems like Nintendo has a grasp on what makes a great console — and they made it portable, because sometimes you want to take your console with you on the go.
They did a good job at fulfilling some of my core needs in a great portable device while keeping it possible to run great games on the go. That’s a great way to make sure the device doesn’t just sit near the television. I was also surprised when I saw Skyrim, it’s great to see Bethesda on board. I’ll be able to play Skyrim - which I already played far too much - on the go, without a laptop or without streaming. That’s awesome.
I’m sure the Switch is not as powerful as the PS4 or the Xbox One, but that’s not the point. Nintendo has noticed the possibility of making a console that’s portable, and they’ve taken all of this to a logical conclusion. I also loved how they made splitscreen possible by allowing you to detach the controller.
You can play the Switch in many ways, which is also why I like the name. You can switch the way you play, and that makes this a flexible console. If developers start to make use of this, the Switch looks like it’s going to be a great console.
We don’t know everything, so I’m looking forward to learning more. But for now, I’m pretty satisfied with the reveal.
