This post is a part of a series about heartbreak and recovery. It's a very personal series of posts.
So, at some point time runs out, and you need to face the truth. I recall that prior to my sabbatical, I blogged about feeling burned out:
Not sure if (web) development has gotten too complicated, or I’m just no longer enjoying it. I could also be having a bad day, but this keeps coming up every few months, no matter the project. This even happens for my own (personal) projects. Anyone else feel this way?
In this post, and at the time, I believed that I was currently experiencing a bore-out. Unfortunately, in retrospect and after some more time now, it seems that I was likely already spent.
In March, in the middle of my sabbatical, I sent out the following tweet:
Good thing I made my sabbatical three months long, because I’m only now starting to unwind and relax, and we’re already one month in… I clearly underestimated how close to burnout I was. I can only imagine how much more energized I will be able to return to work eventually!
At the end of my sabbatical, I did not feel as refreshed as I could have. I wanted to see if I could bring the same motivation back to work, but that was not going to cut it. In fact, due to my poor motivation at work and the circumstances of the job, I came to the conclusion that it was time to switch jobs eventually, probably early or mid 2025.
A little over two months after my sabbatical ended, I sat down with my boss… who told me he was going to fire me. So… looked like that timeline was going to have to shift a little.
I wasn’t keen on staying where I wasn’t wanted so I negotiated with him I’d stay on a little longer so I could search for a new job until the end of the year, and we’d terminate the contract on December 31st, 2024.
Whether that target can be reached, remains to be seen. At least I did find a partner in the meantime. No doubt that has also added a new level of stress to my life. So yes, lots of changes: trying to find an apartment, new partner, new job, lots of things are in flux and times are very strange now.
With enough rest and external support I am sure I will achieve what I must.
